Christmas Island (2023)

We have another Hallmark movie that is available on Netflix for the rest of this month. Kate Gabriel (Rachel Skarsten) is a young pilot excited to change from her regional route on a major airline to flying private jets to exotic destinations. This how she meets the Sharpe family- dad Thomas Sharpe (Jefferson Brown), mom Helen Sharpe (Kate Drummond), teenage daughter Cali Sharpe (Britt Loder), and young son Finn Sharpe (Lincoln MacNeil). They are flying privately to the Alps for Christmas and for a business meeting for the Sharpe's lifestyle company they own and run. Their nanny is waiting in the Alps for them already.
Kate is excited to prove herself, so she doesn't respond well when air traffic control tells her she has to land due to a storm coming in off the Atlantic. She spends a minute arguing with the officer and then asking the Sharpes their opinion, and loses landing spots at JFK and La Guardia and has to go to a small airport off the coast of Nova Scotia in a place called Christmas Island. Once they land, she meets Jim MacLeod (Peter McNeill), the local postmaster, and his adult son, Olliver MacLeod (Andrew Walker), who also happens to be the air traffic control officer Kate was just arguing with. The Sharpes are less than thrilled about being stuck in some random coastal town in Canada and stuck at the airport, so Jim offers to let them stay with him and says that Kate can stay with the mayor. The Sharpes load into Jim's vehicle and Olliver drives Kate. They all go to Jim's house to meet Mayor Maggie Hughes (Lauren Hammersly), who is also Jim's daughter and Olliver's sister. Kate offers to help Helen with anything she needs, and Helen asks her to make Christmas for her children as the nanny was in charge of that and she is already in the Alps. Kate is not particularly fond of Christmas (she does trauma dump later in the film, so we do find out why), so she asks Maggie for help. Maggie says she isn't particularly great either, but she knows someone who is- her brother Olliver. Kate begrudgingly asks Olliver for help, and Olliver is more than happy to oblige, complete with Santa hats for everyone.
I was much more happy with the chemistry here than in my previous review, even if you could not pay me personally to be in a relationship with a pilot. The coastal town environment was fun if not fresh, and again, this is a real place, but I couldn't find much about vacationing there, so I'm not sure this would be a good tourism push. Predictable for sure, but still well done enough to be enjoyable to watch. Overall, 3 stars.

In order to fully invest in and enjoy Hallmark’s Christmas Island, viewers must first suspend disbelief and omit asking questions. The logistics here don’t matter. Yes, it’s all conveniently working out in favor of this couple because it’s a Christmas movie, and that’s how it needs to happen. In some cases, Hallmark movies try mapping more out, but here it just feels like they gave all the chemistry to the actors and told them to go running. (We can maybe blame the strikes. Maybe. I’m not sure.) That said, Christmas Island is indeed one of the year’s better films so far.
Starring Andrew Walker, Rachel Skarsten, Kate Drummond, Jefferson Brown, Peter MacNeill, Lauren Hammersley, Britt Loder, Lincoln McNeil and more, Hallmark’s Christmas Island takes forced proximity to various heights and restores the spirit of Christmas. Skarsten’s Kate is a pilot, flying a seemingly famous influencer family from Los Angeles to Europe when Walker’s Oliver breaks the news that storms are too dangerous and they need to dock immediately. Conveniently, airports like JFK and Logan aren’t available, but this Canadian island where Oliver is actually from is open.

Official Festival Trailer for Psychedelic Horror Mystery 'The Crescent'
Let the drugs kick in, then watch this. An official trailer is available for a psychedelic horror mystery film titled The Crescent that played at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month. The Crescent is a new film from director Seth A. Smith (Lowlife), about a mother and her son who go to a beachfront summer home in hopes of healing after an unexpected death in the family. Once there, some totally weird things start to happen (or so it seems). There's some very abstract, mesmerizing, trippy footage in this trailer but it's hard to make any sense of it without seeing the film. The cast includes Danika Vandersteen, Britt Loder, Andrew Gillis, Woodrow Graves, & Terrance Murray. I'm not sure what to make of this. Take a look. ›››
